Four people have died in a collision on the R38 road between Hendrina and Carolina in Mpumalanga.

The head-on collision on Sunday involved two sedans, and all the occupants were declared dead at the scene, said Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison Jackie Macie.

“The victims include two passengers and a driver in one vehicle and the driver of a sedan, who was a sole occupant in the vehicle at the time of the crash. There were no other injuries in the incident, and all victims died at the scene. The investigation into the crash has already commenced,” he said.

Macie called on motorists to exercise extreme caution on the road to avoid deadly crashes, especially during rainy weather. He adds that the current conditions affect the visibility and drivability of vehicles.

“We are calling for heightened vigilance and stricter adherence to the rules in order to avoid devastating crashes. Motorists must operate their vehicles in line with prevailing conditions on the road. They must reduce speed and increase following distances,” said Macie.

Earlier on Sunday, Macie’s department issued an alert following forecasts of heavy rain across the province. A Level 9 severe weather warning for disruptive rainfall was issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS) for multiple provinces, with residents urged to stay indoors.

In Limpopo, one of the provinces also affected by the severe weather, a car crash killed six people.

MEC for Transport and Community Safety Violet Mathye said the crash occurred on the D4170 at Mopetsi Bridge, in the Fetakgomo Tubatse Municipality, Sekhukhune District. Preliminary reports indicate that a double-cab van with eight occupants veered off the road after the driver lost control.

She said:

Six passengers lost their lives at the scene. What is even more heartbreaking is that five of the six deceased were immediate family members sharing the same surname.

“The two injured occupants were transported to nearby hospitals.”

The MEC has instructed officials to institute a high-level investigation into the cause of the accident.
