  • Several road closures are in place in Cape Town.
  • The measures have been implemented ahead of the first sitting of Parliament on Friday.
  • Some of the closures already came into effect on Wednesday night.

Cape Town motorists have been warned of numerous road closures ahead of the first sitting of Parliament on Friday.

The City of Cape Town said that the road closures, some of which came into effect on Wednesday night around the Cape Town International Conference Centre (CTICC), are likely to affect traffic in the CBD and Foreshore.

As of Wednesday night, two left lanes on Walter Sisulu Avenue at Lower Long Street, toward Heerengracht, have been closed. Only the right lane will be open to traffic.

This lane may be closed on Friday and Saturday if needed, the City of Cape Town said.

In addition, Lower Long Street is closed from FW De Klerk Boulevard toward Walter Sisulu Avenue and FW De Klerk Boulevard is closed at Heerengracht Street.

The left lane along Heerengracht between the Walter Sisulu Avenue traffic circle and FW De Klerk Boulevard is closed, and the right lane at the MyCiTi depot along FW De Klerk Boulevard is also closed.

In addition, the left lane on the elevated freeway next to the Convention Centre will be closed from 09:00 on Friday. The closures will be in place until the events at the CTICC have concluded, the City said.

The CTICC will host the first sitting of Parliament as the new National Assembly is still under construction following a fire early in 2022.

The fire affected the Old Assembly and the National Assembly building.

Since then, national assembly sessions and the State of the Nation Address have been held at the Cape Town City Hall.
