KwaZulu-Natal Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) spokesperson Sindi Msimang said the truck was carrying a mixed load that included hydrochloric acid.

She added that authorities were still trying to establish what the spilt substance was.

Msimang added that authorities at the scene had trouble reaching the truck driver, who may have left the scene for safety reasons.

She said that the truck had not been in a collision.

The cause of the spill has not yet been determined.

Msimang urged motorists caught in traffic close to the scene to refrain from smoking and to keep their windows closed.
