The National Assembly will, before the coming elections, consider a motion that should prevent a situation where political parties could get away with receiving vast sums in undeclared donations.

Parliament passed the Electoral Matters Amendment Bill in March. The bill tinkered with provisions relating to the declaration of donations to political parties and the split of how funds are determined, now giving the bigger parties a larger share of the money.

These changes weren't necessary in terms of the stated purpose of the bill, which is to bring other pieces of legislation, including the Political Parties Funding Act, in line with the Electoral Amendment Act, which allows independent candidates to contest the national and provincial elections.
