Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has revealed that nobody else's DNA was found on the seven-year-old girl at the centre of the alleged rape case in Matatiele, describing the investigation as complex and without any eyewitnesses.
Addressing the media on Friday, Mchunu said three persons of interest had been identified, and further DNA testing is under way.
"From all the available information, it's evident that the investigation generally followed proper procedures, although there were challenges along the way," Mchunu said.
"A thorough probe is now in full swing, and we are engaging with all relevant stakeholders to ensure every detail is scrutinised carefully and comprehensively."

The child's mother recently took to social media, alleging that she had received little support from police. This sparked national outrage and a wave of protests this week, with demonstrators demanding justice for the child.
Mchunu said that, based on the case docket at the time, the senior State prosecutor declined to prosecute in November 2024 due to insufficient evidence.
