A North West police officer has been convicted of murdering his estranged wife and her boyfriend.

Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) spokesperson Phaladi Shuping said that 49-year-old Warrant Officer Annius Mmutle had been convicted on two counts of murder relating to an incident on 14 March 2023.

"He shot his estranged wife, Motshegwa Mmutle, 44, and her boyfriend, Katlego Selokwane, 33," Shuping said.

"The incident was reported to IPID for investigation as a death as a result of police action. Mmutle, who was stationed at Nietverdint SAPS, has been in custody since his arrest as the investigating officer opposed his release on bail."

Mmutle pleaded guilty in the Zeerust Magistrate's Court.

The case was postponed to 2 July for a pre-sentencing report.

Earlier this month, another police officer was found guilty of murdering his girlfriend.

Sergeant Monday Shimondzo Ngobeni, 43, was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment by the Graskop Magistrate's Court after he was convicted of the murder of his 37-year-old girlfriend Agnes Maluleka in June last year.

"On the day of the incident, Sergeant Ngobeni went to Maluleka's place of work, where she worked as a cashier, and accused her of cheating on him. They argued until Sergeant Ngobeni took out his service pistol and shot Maluleka. She was hit in the chest and fell behind the counter," said Shuping.

Ngobeni then walked over to Maluleka and shot her twice in the head. The security officer on duty then locked him in the store and called the police. He was arrested on the scene.
