Gauteng police have arrested a suspect and launched a manhunt for another individual in connection with the deadly shooting of the City of Ekurhuleni chief auditor, Mpho Mafole.
A 40-year-old was taken into custody on Sunday, police said on Tuesday.
Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said a warrant of arrest was also issued for the second suspect, Hlanganani Agripper Mncwango.
Mafole was ambushed and killed while driving on 30 June.
The motive for the shooting remains unknown as police investigations continue.
Mafole was murdered just three months after starting his job, and was investigating the unexplained disappearance of R2 billion from the municipal revenue.

News24 previously reported that he was driving on the R23 near Kempton Park, in the eastern part of the city, when his car was shot at and left riddled with bullets. Police discovered his bloodied body slumped in his seat.
He was still wearing his seatbelt, surrounded by shattered glass.
Mafole joined the municipality in April and previously spent 15 years in service with the Auditor-General.
His killing is the latest in a string of high-profile hits targeting fraud investigators, forensic accountants, whistleblowers, and police officers.
Finding his body
Previously speaking to News24, Mafole’s cousin, Khanyisile Mmatli, said finding his body in his car was a lasting, haunting image.
“It was the worst thing that we had ever imagined,” she added, saying: “The only window that was totally broken was the driver’s window ... it was very bloody.”

Ekurhuleni Mayor, Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, previously said that Mafole’s assassination was linked to his work.
Nevhuhwili stated that the 40-year-old suspect is scheduled to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
“The team is also looking for Mncwango after a warrant of arrest was issued for him by the court.”
On the day he was killed, Mafole attended a board meeting alongside the City of Ekurhuleni’s group chief audit executive, Phillip Rakgwale, who spoke highly of Mafole’s work ethic and integrity.
Mafole worked under him as the group divisional head of corporate audits and forensic investigations.
Speaking to News24 at the time of Mafole’s death, Rakgwale said:
We attended a board meeting together on that day, and it was a whole-day session. We obviously [spent] most of the time together that day and had good conversations.
“I still said to him that he just recently joined us, and he mustn’t leave us. He said that you lose touch if you stay in one place for long, so he will maybe leave after five years and join another organisation so that he can become sharp in the industry.
“He has always been righteous, doing the right things … a man of integrity. He wouldn’t do anything that is untoward, that will go against integrity.”
