Two people have been shot in Valhalla Park on Saturday.

  • One man was killed and a second injured in a suspected hit in Valhalla Park, Cape Town.
  • A local councillor said this confirmed fears of volatility following the arrest of Ralph Stanfield, who the State alleges heads a criminal enterprise in association with gangs in the area.
  • A source said it could have been a revenge killing.

Western Cape police are on the hunt for gunmen who killed a man and seriously injured another in Angela Street, Valhalla Park, on Saturday afternoon.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said a 41-year-old man was declared dead at the scene, while a 39-year-old man was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

"Bishop Lavis police responded to a complaint of a shooting, and upon arrival on the scene, they found the victims with gunshot wounds to their bodies. The unknown suspect/s fled the scene and are yet to be arrested," he said.

Twigg said the motive for the attack was under investigation and that a murder and attempted murder case had been opened.

Sources close to the investigation told News24 that a hit was suspected.

"There was definitely a hit put out for them," said the source.

Sub council for the area Angus McKenzie also added that it appears to have been a hit put out for the victims.

 McKenzie said:

I feared this would happen and have been engaging SAPS over the last few days [to patrol in the area], specifically now that Ralph [Stanfield] has been remanded in custody. These shooting incidents will continue now that gang turf is left vacant.

Stanfield and his wife, Nicole Johnson, were arrested in Constantia in September on charges related to them tracing an employee who owed them money.

During the bail application of the couple and their co-accused - Johannes Abrahams and Denver Booysen - in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court, the State alleged that Stanfield heads the Firm, a criminal enterprise run in association with 28s prison numbers gangs. They were not granted bail and are currently in custody.

Stanfield is alleged to operate in Valhalla Park, Bishop Lavis.

Community policing forum spokesperson Graham Lindhorst said the dead man was very well known and that it might have been a revenge murder.

"It looks to be a gang retaliation," he said.

He added that there had always been a high presence of law enforcement agencies in Bishop Lavis.
