Police are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving after a police van was found overturned in water along Lancaster Road in Gordon's Bay, Cape Town, on Wednesday morning.

Western Cape police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said the driver lost control at around 03:00.

He said two police officers on patrol were in the van at the time. They suffered minor injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital.

He said the incident was being investigated.

Lana Bonthuys, a local resident, said she was taking her children to school when she walked past the scene at around 07:00.

"I stopped to offer help, but there was no one inside.

"It's concerning that no officials were there for something that may have happened hours ago," she said.

"It doesn't reflect well on us to have a police vehicle overturned and unattended on a public road."
