The late old guard gangster, Ernie 'Lastig' Solomon, tried to help two gangs in Paarl reach a peace deal in 2019, according to a witness testifying in a murder trial in the Western Cape High Court on Thursday.

However, the witness struggled to make headway in his story because of frequent interjections for him to translate and clarify his words and expressions from Afrikaaps to English for the court record.

No witnesses, lawyers, investigating officers or even the judge may be named because of the high risk associated with the trial regarding one murder and at least 13 attempted murders on 6 December 2019 in Paarl East.
