11 months ago 10

Cramped in a small house in Gaza with three other families, where they had no power and unreliable cellphone signal, South African literature professor Haider Eid, who has been living in there with his family, sent News24 a chilling voice note.

"All the doors of the flats were broken down, the windows smashed, and there was dark black smoke in every pathway we ran due to the bombing," he said, the panic in his voice audible.

He, his wife and their two toddler daughters had just fled from their home, where they had confined themselves to a small room for safety reasons.
