A Polokwane man has been arrested in connection with several murders a Senwabarwana-based police sergeant allegedly orchestrated after she had taken out funeral and life insurance policies in the victims’ names.

The sergeant Rachel Kutumela, her 23-year-old daughter, Anna Shokane, and Kutumela’s older sister, Flora Shokaneher, were arrested in September on nine counts of murder, multiple counts of fraud, and money laundering.

The man, aged 49, was arrested on Tuesday, while trying to leave his Moletjie village home, just outside Polokwane. He is related to the three women.

It is alleged that Kutumela took out policies worth R10 million from ABSA, FNB, Standard Bank, Capitec, Hollard, Assupol, Old Mutual, One Life and Clientele.

It is alleged that she orchestrated the murders between 2019 and 2024.

The victims include a woman who died in a shack fire, and a disabled man who drowned in a dam.

When the policies were paid out, she allegedly used the money to buy two Range Rover SUVs, a Toyota Land Cruiser, a BMW 3-series car and a Mercedes-Benz C-Class vehicle.
