Hugo Ferreira has been sentenced to two life terms in prison after he raped his 8-day-old daughter "to give her something to cry about" and severely beat the infant, who later died of her injuries.

Describing the crimes as "brutal, ruthless and monstrous", Judge Portia Phahlane sentenced Ferreira, 37, in the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria on Thursday.

This was after he pleaded guilty to raping and murdering his infant daughter in June 2023. He claimed the beating and rape happened because she would not stop crying.

He appeared apathetic throughout the proceedings.
