It was a nail-biting moment when Professor Steve Matshidze and his team performed the first robotic-assisted knee replacement surgery at the Botlokwa Level One District and Rural Hospital in Limpopo.
Speaking to News24 a week after the operation, Matshidze said at one stage they were worried that they would be forced to abandon the procedure in the middle of the process and continue manually.
"We were concerned that we would be forced to abandon the procedure due to technical glitches and continue with it manually. Only a few people were allowed in the theatre during a joint replacement because of the high infection rate," he said.
