Early indications are that the ANC's support could bottom out nationally, largely due to a potentially huge drop in support in KwaZulu-Natal due to both the entry of Jacob Zuma's uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) and the continued resurgence of the IFP.
The ANC's support in the province looks likely to return to pre-2000 levels, indicating that party support is calibrating to pre-Zuma levels, which could significantly impact the party's support nationally.
Historically, KwaZulu-Natal was among the provinces where ANC support was weakest until Zuma's ascent to the party's helm. He became president of the ANC in 2007.
