The City of Cape Town is offering a R100 000 cash reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators of a mass shooting in Mitchells Plain.

The City of Cape Town has offered a R100 000 reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of gunmen who killed five people and wounded seven in a mass shooting in Mitchells Plain on Thursday.

The City and police have been working closely together to restore calm.

Acting Mayor Eddie Andrews said the shooting was a “direct threat to the safety and well-being” of communities.

“This level of violence will not be tolerated - not in Mitchells Plain, and not anywhere in our city. Every resident has the right to feel safe in their own neighbourhood, and we will act decisively to protect that right,” he added.

“We call on residents to come forward with any information that may assist law enforcement agencies.”

Andrews said the City’s Safety and Security Directorate was working closely with police and that additional staff were deployed to the area to restore peace.

Andrews said the deployments included Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) officers, metro police, the Tactical Response Unit and traffic services’ roadblock unit.

Mayco Member for Safety and Security JP Smith said the arrest of the perpetrators was imperative.

“Apart from manpower, the City also has various other resources that are available to SAPS to help expedite the investigations. We will maintain our increased deployment levels in the area to help restore calm, and to find the perpetrators. I understand that the public might be hesitant to speak up, but please, if you know anything about yesterday’s events, we ask that you consider coming forward and sharing that information,” Smith added.

Meanwhile, Western Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa said the province’s Anti-Gang Unit was investigating the incident.
