Sandton police have arrested two men who allegedly kidnapped an elderly woman while posing as police officers.

The dramatic takedown occurred along Malibongwe Drive in Randburg on Tuesday afternoon.

A heavy police presence, including police helicopters, was observed along the busy main road.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Sello, the elderly woman was approached by the two suspects in Alberton.

They presented themselves as police officers and lured her to a bank in Woodmead to withdraw money.

“The bank cashier became suspicious as the withdrawal request was for a large sum of money,” Sello said.

“The Sandton police were notified and reacted swiftly, also mobilising the SAPS Airwing.”

She added that the suspects drove away upon realising the police were onto them, leading to a high-speed chase that ended on Malibongwe Drive, where the suspects were cornered.

No shots were fired.

The two suspects were arrested and are expected to appear in court soon.
