Heavy rain that may lead to localised flooding, and strong winds are expected for most parts of the Western Cape, according to the South African Weather Service (SAWS).

Damaging winds are also forecast for some parts of the Eastern Cape, while partly cloudy and cool conditions are expected for most provinces.

Impact-based warnings

A yellow level 2 warning has been issued for damaging coastal winds resulting in small vessels and personal watercraft being at risk of taking in water and capsizing in locality between Saldanha Bay and Cape Agulhas, and spreading to Plettenberg Bay by the afternoon until Sunday.

A yellow level 2 warning has been issued for damaging waves resulting in difficulty in navigation at sea between Lamberts Bay and Cape Agulhas, and spreading to Plettenberg Bay by Sunday morning.

A yellow level 2 warning has been issued for disruptive rainfall leading to localised flooding of susceptible formal and informal settlements or roads, and low-lying areas over the Cederberg, Bergrivier, Saldanha Bay, Swartland, Cape Town, Cape Winelands, and the western parts of the Overberg District in the Western Cape.

A yellow level 2 has been issued for strong damaging winds leading to localised damage to informal settlements, as well as the risk of runaway fires over the central parts of the Northern Cape and Dr Beyers Naude and Inxuba Yethemba local municipalities in the Eastern Cape.

In the SAWS’ colour-coded weather warning system, yellow indicates a moderate risk of impact that requires caution and awareness, while orange indicates that a higher-risk impact is expected, requiring increased attention and preparation.

The SAWS uses the numbers to indicate the likelihood of weather-based impacts occurring. Levels 2 and 6 are high, and level 4 is low.
