The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued warnings of severe thunderstorms with heavy rain, strong winds, and hail in parts of Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Gauteng, the Free State, and the North West.

Hot and humid conditions are also expected in KwaZulu-Natal.

Impact-based warnings

Orange level 5 warning: Severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours, strong, damaging winds, large amounts of small hail and excessive lightning, leading to damage to infrastructure, informal settlements, property, vehicles, livelihood and livestock, as well as flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges are expected over the extreme eastern parts of Mpumalanga and Limpopo.

Yellow level 4 warning: Severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours, strong, damaging winds, large amounts of small hail and excessive lightning, leading to damage to infrastructure, informal settlements, property, vehicles, livelihood and livestock, as well as localised flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges are expected over KwaZulu-Natal as well as the central parts of Mpumalanga and Limpopo.

Yellow level 4 warning: Damaging winds and waves leading to localised disruption of small harbours or ports for a short period of time, and damage to settlements and infrastructure are expected between Port Edward and Port St Lucia.

Yellow level 2 warning: Severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours, strong damaging winds, large amounts of small hail and excessive lightning, leading to localised damage to infrastructure, informal settlements, property, vehicles, livelihood and livestock, as well as localised flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges are expected over Gauteng, the eastern parts of North West, extreme eastern parts of Free State, south-western parts of Limpopo and the western highveld of Mpumalanga.

In the SAWS’s colour-coded weather warning system, yellow indicates a moderate risk of impact that requires caution and awareness, while orange indicates that higher-risk impact is expected, requiring increased attention and preparation.

The SAWS uses the numbers to indicate the likelihood of weather-based impacts occurring. Levels 2 and 6 are high, and level 4 is low.
