Nonhlakanipho Buthelezi, 25, was a final year mechanical engineering student when she was killed on 23 December.

Nonhlakanipho Buthelezi, a final-year mechanical engineering student, set out for a festive night of partying with an old friend at the Classic Shisanyama in Chesterville on the outskirts of Durban on 23 December.

However, what was meant to be a night of fun for the two young women, who were raised in rural KwaZulu-Natal but trying to make life in the bustling city of Durban, turned into a night of terror for 25-year-old Buthelezi, who was raped, robbed, stabbed and left to die on a Durban freeway.

The men who killed her had promised to take her home safely.
