The Johannesburg council will likely have a new Speaker as early as Monday, with Margaret Arnolds, an African Independent Congress (AIC) councillor, chosen as a Speaker nominee by party caucus members late on Thursday. 

Nine political parties representing a fraction of council seats in the metro met on Thursday to decide who should replace former COPE councillor Colleen Makhubele as the council leader. 

News24 was told by several leaders, who attended the caucus meeting of minority parties, Arnolds was highly favoured and chosen for her "track record in council", where she served for about three terms.
