The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has launched an investigation into a police shootout in Mariannhill that left nine gunmen dead in KwaZulu-Natal.

It is also investigating the death of six people in a second shootout, which occurred in Mpumalanga on Tuesday when police responded to reports of a possible cash-in-transit robbery in Emalahleni.

Six others were arrested.
