Iris House provides free respite care in 62 communities throughout the Western Cape.

A Western Cape organisation that supports the families and caregivers of children who have life-threatening conditions has to cut back on the services it offers.

Iris House Children's Hospice, whose work supports more than 670 children, is a casualty of the provincial Department of Social Development's funding crisis after the national government slashed billions of rands in funding to provincial governments.

Hospice founder and chairperson Sue van der Linde said: "Iris House will have no choice but to activate a planned social enterprise business [Carers At Home] that will charge market-related rates to provide respite care for special needs children.
