Convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester has failed at his second attempt to be transferred from the maximum-security eBongweni Correctional Centre in KwaZulu-Natal to a prison in Pretoria.

The Gauteng High Court in Pretoria dismissed his application on the merits and for a lack of urgency on Tuesday.

This is the second urgent application brought by Bester for an order setting aside the Department of Correctional Services’ decision to transfer him to eBongweni and requiring that he be moved back to a prison in the capital city.

The first application, argued in February, was struck from the roll for lack of urgency and for not being properly enrolled.

Bester wanted the transfer, claiming he could not consult his legal team to prepare for his criminal trial at the Free State High Court in Bloemfontein on charges related to his alleged dramatic prison break in May 2022.
