After 30 years of democracy, white professors and associate professors at mostly former Afrikaans universities still outnumber their African, Coloured and Indian counterparts.

A snap survey by News24 found that almost three out of four members of the professoriate at North-West University (NWU), or 74%, as well as 69.3% at Stellenbosch University (SU), 68% at the University of the Free State (UFS), and 66% at the University of Pretoria (UP) are white.

SU has the dubious distinction of having only 18, or 3.7%, local African professors and associate professors among the 486 in its employ. Only 105 of its 1 304 academic staff are African.

South Africans need to be in the know if we want to create a prosperous future. News24 has kept the country informed for 25 years, and we're about to enter a new chapter of fearless journalism.
