The Wheels of Justice, a News24 documentary, tells the story of Langa Safety Patrol (LSP), led by Bandile Gcuwa, and its mission to keep a community safe from crime in the face of a dysfunctional police force.

Gcuwa, who was awarded the title of Crime Fighter of the Year in 2024, details the birth and rise of LSP, spurred by a crime wave that gripped the area and burning tensions between the community and police.

Beyond examining the positive role of neighbourhood watch groups, the documentary also explores the darker side of a broken criminal justice system and how frustrations manifest in immediate, extrajudicial punishment.

 Ian Cameron, chairperson of Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police, offers insight into state deficiencies while also warning of the slippery slope into vigilantism in a country already grappling with extreme levels of violence.
