EFF leader Julius Malema pleaded with the East London Regional Court to acquit his co-accused bodyguard, Adriaan Snyman, and claimed, without evidence, that he was prosecuted in the hope that he might turn against Malema.

Malema and Snyman were in court on Wednesday for the second day of their trial, in which they are accused of discharging a firearm.

It stemmed from a viral video, which showed Malema firing what looked like a rifle during the EFF's fifth anniversary celebrations at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane on 28 July 2018.
