Constitutional law expert Pierre de Vos has expressed scepticism over Stellenbosch University's commitment to changing the residence culture at its Wilgenhof men's residence.

"I'm not saying that the university doesn't think it's horrible, that they wouldn't want to change it, but I'm not sure they're brave enough to do so because there are forces that are powerful that can hurt the university if they take the radical steps that are necessary to actually engage them."

De Vos was one of the panellists who participated in a webinar organised by News24 on Thursday to discuss initiation practices that have continued unabated at the 120-year-old Wilgenhof residence, and the veil of secrecy that allowed the apparent abuse of students to remain in the shadows for decades. The webinar was hosted by News24 editor-in-chief Adriaan Basson.
