Three men accused of murdering an off-duty police officer while assisting his girlfriend with her broken-down vehicle in Benrose, Johannesburg, have been arrested.

Warrant Officer Jabulani Mabuza was shot dead after he and his girlfriend were accosted near the Benrose west on-ramp on 8 September.

Mabuza had been called to the area by his girlfriend after her vehicle broke down.

According to Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale, just as a tow truck driver arrived to assist, they were accosted by armed men.

While the truck driver managed to flee, driving to Jeppe police station for assistance, Mabuza was shot.

“Warrent Officer Mabuza and his girlfriend managed to cross the freeway and were taken to Brenthurst Hospital for medical attention, where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries,” Mogale said.

Police said the attackers had stolen two firearms during the incident

On Monday, the Hawks, assisted by other police units and private security companies, executed warrants of arrest at three addresses in Johannesburg. Three men, aged between 30 and 32, were arrested.

Mogale said:

The team also recovered three unlicensed 9mm firearms (two Beretta pistols with serial numbers and a Norinco pistol with its serial number filed off), ammunition for the pistols, a laptop, a cellphone, and a silver-grey BMW suspected to have been used in the commission of a crime.

The men are expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on charges of murder, attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms, possession of ammunition, and possession of suspected stolen property.
