Three men were killed in a shooting in Slovo Park in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday, and Mthatha police have launched a manhunt for the perpetrators.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana said the incident occurred at around 04:00 in Gate Street.

“Police were alerted to the scene after reports of gunshots were received. Upon arrival, officers discovered three deceased males between the ages of 20 and 23.”

The one man sustained two gunshot wounds to the head. The second sustained one gunshot wound to his head and three to other parts of his body. The third was found with a gunshot wound to the back of the head. The bullet exited through the front of his head.

“One of the deceased is a known individual in the area. The motive for the attack remains unknown at this stage,” said Gantana.

Police are appealing to anyone with information to come forward.

Several shootings in the province have made headlines since September last year.

In January, one incident claimed the lives of six men and left one woman seriously injured in Gqeberha.

When police arrived at the scene at a house in Kani Street, Veeplaas, they found the six bodies strewn across the floor. All six of the deceased were men aged 21 to 27. A 21-year-old woman was found alive in a pool of blood and she was taken to hospital.

In December, four people died in a mass shooting in Mente, near Willowvale, in the Eastern Cape. Gunmen opened fire on four family members travelling in a Toyota Corolla Cross.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa said the victims were travelling towards the Willowvale central business district when attackers in two Toyota Avanza vehicles cornered them.

In September, 17 people were killed and a man was seriously injured in two mass shootings in Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape. In one house, 12 women and one man were shot dead. In the other, three women and one man were killed, and a man was seriously injured.
