The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned of severe thunderstorms with heavy rain that may lead to localised flooding in parts of North West, Free State, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and KwaZulu-Natal.

Fine and warm to hot conditions are expected in the eastern interior of the Western Cape.

Impact-based warnings

Yellow level 2 warning: Severe thunderstorms expected with heavy downpours leading to localised flooding of roads, low-lying areas, and bridges, excessive lightning, damaging winds, and small hail in the eastern parts of North West, Free State, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and the extreme south-east of Limpopo.

Yellow level 1 warning: Disruptive rainfall over the eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal, resulting in localised flooding of formal/informal settlements or roads, difficult driving conditions on dirt roads, and minor vehicle accidents due to slippery roads and reduced visibility.

In the SAWS’ colour-coded weather warning system, yellow indicates a moderate risk of impact that requires caution and awareness, while orange indicates that higher-risk impact is expected, requiring increased attention and preparation.

SAWS uses the numbers to indicate the likelihood of weather-based impacts occurring. Levels 2 and 6 are high, and Level 4 is low.
