The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned of extreme weather in parts of the Northern Cape and Free State with severe thunderstorms, heavy rain, and damaging winds in the region, which could lead to flooding.

Further weather warnings have also been issued for parts of the North West and Eastern Cape, as well as KwaZulu-Natal.

Impact-based warnings

Orange level 5 warning: Severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours leading to flooding of roads, settlements and low-lying areas, as well as damaging winds, large amounts of small hail and excessive lighting are expected over eastern parts of Northern Cape, and western parts of the Free State.

Yellow level 2 warning: Severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours leading to localised flooding of susceptible roads, settlements, low-lying bridges/areas, as well as possible strong damaging winds, hail, and excessive lightning over the western parts of the Northern Cape, south to central parts of the North West, central to western parts of the Free State, and central parts of the Eastern Cape.

Yellow level 1 warning: Severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours leading to localised flooding of susceptible roads, settlements, low-lying bridges/areas, hail, and excessive lightning in places over the western and southern parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

In the SAWS’s colour-coded weather warning system, yellow indicates a moderate risk of impact that requires caution and awareness, while orange indicates that higher-risk impact is expected, requiring increased attention and preparation.

The SAWS uses the numbers to indicate the likelihood of weather-based impacts occurring. Levels 2 and 6 are high, and level 4 is low.
