A number of houses had their roofs blown off as a result of the tornado. Tongaat residents living in temporary shelters want urgent government intervention to rebuild their homes. (Darren Stewart/Gallo Images).

Tongaat residents who are temporarily being housed in tents following the devastating storm that wreaked havoc in the province want government to speed up humanitarian relief so that they can return to normal life.

The storm, which locals described as a tornado, wreaked havoc in Tongaat, killing at least seven people, leaving over 200 others injured and damaging thousands of homes in the area.

Many people remain homeless following the storms and now want clear deadlines from government on when they will be able to return to their homes.

Those who have been unable to return to their homes have been living in tents for the past three weeks and surviving through assistance from the government, donors and non-governmental organisations.

Residents complained that they won't be able to live in tents for much longer, as there is no privacy and they long to be back in their own homes.
