ANC Youth League (ANCYL) secretary-general Tsakani Shiviti has resigned from Parliament, and her seat has been taken by her deputy in the party, Zama Khanyase.
Khanyase was sworn in as a member of Parliament on Tuesday, Speaker in the National Assembly Thoko Didiza announced ahead of the Budget on Thursday.
Shiviti was elected as ANCYL secretary-general while Khanyase was elected as her deputy at the Youth League’s December conference. Because the role is full-time, she cannot be an MP. Hence, her resignation left a vacancy in the ANC’s caucus.
“Yesterday, this vacancy was filled with effect from 24 February 2026. The member has made and subscribed to the oath in the speaker’s office. I want to welcome her,” Didiza said.
ANCYL spokesperson Sindiswa Scheepers said she was confident that Khanyase, who is a former teacher, would add value to the ANC’s caucus in Parliament.

She said: “We have deposited her because we believe she will drive the issues we feel strongly about, such as youth unemployment. Zama is aware of the Youth League’s view that unemployment should be declared a national disaster and the efforts we have made to see this through; her addition to the caucus will be invaluable.”

Reflecting on Shiviti’s time as an MP, Scheepers said that in her short stint in Parliament, Shiviti has managed to shine a light on youth struggles, including historic university debt.
“Shiviti has made a vital contribution to the committees which she served and has been at the forefront of fighting battles on behalf of young people of South Africa,” Scheepers said.
