The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned of severe thunderstorms and extreme heat in parts of the country.

It also warned of flooding, hail, and strong winds in affected areas.

Impact-based warnings:

Yellow Level 2 warning: Severe thunderstorms with localised flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges, large amounts of small hail, and localised damage to infrastructure due to damaging winds expected over the central and south-eastern parts of the North West and over the central and eastern parts of the Free State, as well as the western parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

In the SAWS’ colour-coded weather warning system, yellow indicates a moderate risk of impact that requires caution and awareness, while orange indicates that a higher-risk impact is expected, requiring increased attention and preparation.

The SAWS uses the numbers to indicate the likelihood of weather-based impacts occurring. Levels 2 and 6 are high, and Level 4 is low.

Advisories

Severe thunderstorms are expected in parts of the North West, Free State, and KwaZulu-Natal. These may cause localised flooding of roads, low-lying areas, and bridges. Large amounts of small hail and damage to infrastructure due to strong winds are expected in the central and eastern parts of the Northern Cape.

A heatwave with persistently high temperatures is expected until Thursday in parts of the Eastern Cape, including the Sarah Baartman, Chris Hani, Joe Gqabi, Alfred Nzo, OR Tambo, and Amathole district municipalities, and until Friday in most parts of the Northern Cape, Free State, and southern North West.
