The South African Weather Service has warned of severe thunderstorms leading to flooding and hail in parts of the Northern Cape, North West, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.

Impact-based warnings

Yellow level 2 warning: Severe thunderstorms leading to localised flooding and large amounts of small hail are expected over the north-eastern parts of the Northern Cape, western parts of the North West and Free State, the southern parts of KwaZulu-Natal, as well as the Eastern Cape, except in the south-west.

In the SAWS’ colour-coded weather warning system, yellow indicates a moderate risk of impact that requires caution and awareness, while orange indicates that a higher-risk impact is expected, requiring increased attention and preparation.

SAWS uses the numbers to indicate the likelihood of weather-based impacts occurring. Levels 2 and 6 are high, and Level 4 is low.

Advisories

Hot and humid weather will result in extremely uncomfortable conditions in places along the Eastern Cape’s south coast and adjacent interior, as well as the eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal.
