Severe thunderstorms, heavy rain and damaging winds are forecast for most parts of the country, but the Western Cape is expected to experience warm to hot conditions, according to the South African Weather Service (SAWS).

Impact-based warnings

Yellow Level 4 warning: Severe thunderstorms over the western parts of the country. Expect heavy downpours, damaging winds, excessive lightning, hail and flooding. This may lead to dangerous fast-flowing streams, road closures, damage to roads, property and vehicles, as well as agricultural losses. Lightning poses a risk of fire incidents.

Yellow Level 2 warning: Severe thunderstorms in the following areas: South-western parts of Gauteng, south-western Bushveld of Limpopo, northern parts of Free State, and most of the North West province (except the north-western parts). These may result in localised flooding, large hail and heavy downpours accompanied by excessive lightning.

In the SAWS’ colour-coded weather warning system, yellow indicates a moderate risk of impact that requires caution and awareness, while orange indicates that a higher-risk impact is expected, requiring increased attention and preparation.

SAWS uses the numbers to indicate the likelihood of weather-based impacts occurring. Levels 2 and 6 are high, and Level 4 is low.
