Two people were arrested for the murder of this Rustenburg couple.

• Two people have been taken into custody for the murder of a couple in Rustenburg.
• The couple was shot dead in a shopping mall parking lot over the weekend.
• Police also recovered a vehicle and a firearm.

Two people have been arrested in connection with the murders of a couple at a shopping mall in Rustenburg on Saturday afternoon.

The 29-year-old and 41-year-old suspects were arrested in connection with the murders on Wednesday.

North West police commissioner, Major General Patrick Asaneng, said police also recovered a vehicle and firearm during the arrests.

“The arrest of the two suspects is a result of excellent Crime Intelligence work in identifying, locating and tracking the vehicle that was used to flee from the crime scene. The vehicle was traced, found and seized at Ndamoyi, Boitekong,” said Asaneng.

After questioning, one of them conceded that he was driving the vehicle and he said his friend had shot the couple, Asaneng said.

He then led the police to his alleged accomplice in Rustenburg East.

“The police, upon arrival, found the second person who showed them a pistol. The suspect was immediately placed under arrest, and the firearm seized,” said Asaneng.

The suspects are expected to appear before the Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

“These swift arrests should send a strong message to those who commit crime that the police in the province will relentlessly track them down and that they will have no place to hide,” said Asaneng.

News24 previously reported that police in Rustenburg had launched a search operation after the couple was brutally killed in a parking lot at a shopping centre on Saturday.

Preliminary reports indicated the couple was killed following a heated altercation with the occupants of a white Kia Rio that had no number plates.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Adele Myburgh, said paramedics declared both victims dead at the scene.

The motive for the attack is yet to be determined.
