  • The police have arrested two suspects, aged 30 and 33, in connection with the murder of four people who were shot in Soshanguve on New Year's Day.
  • The two suspects will appear in court on Thursday.
  • Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi said the police should leave no stone unturned and arrest those responsible.

Two people were arrested on Tuesday morning in connection with the fatal shooting of four people, including a teenage girl, in Soshanguve, Block P, on New Year's Day.

Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the two, aged 30 and 33, would appear in court on Thursday on charges of murder.

News24 previously reported, according to an internal police report, 80 empty rifle cartridges were found at the scene as well as 19 cartridges from a 9mm firearm.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi congratulated the police, including the Hawks, for making the breakthrough in the case.

"We are pleased that the 72-hour activation plan police activated has given them results.

"After being alerted of the incident, I encouraged the provincial police to release all the resources we have as the state.

"I have also implored police to leave no stone unturned, get to the bottom of what transpired, and ensure that everyone involved in this case is arrested," Lesufi said.

The premier condemned the killing of the four people.

After meeting with officers from the Soshanguve police station, who gave him a picture of the high crime levels in the area, he said this was an indication policing in the area should overhauled.

"This type of attack characterises the area of Tshwane.

"The statistics of crime we were given about crime in this area are shocking. There are 331 active cases for this area; the numbers are shocking," Lesufi added.

The four killed were identified as Vuyolethu Ziwele, 14, Thandi Dlamini, 33, Phomolo Malakapatlo, 28, and Constable Mpho Kgobotlo, 29.

They were killed after ushering in the New Year.

A witness said the suspects were armed with rifles and wore black bulletproof vests.
