A speeding motorbike crashed into a pedestrian, killing both rider and pedestrian, on the N1 Freeway (inbound) near the Okavango Bridge in Cape Town in the early hours of Sunday morning. 

A City of Cape Town traffic officer who arrived on the scene to direct traffic was then seriously injured when a bakkie rammed into him.  

Western Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said the officer was taken to a medical facility.

"According to reports, the motorcycle collided with the pedestrian. The 31-year-old motorcyclist and an adult female were declared deceased on the scene, while another female victim was taken to a medical facility for medical treatment.

"A traffic officer attending to the scene was also injured when he was hit by another vehicle. He was [also] taken to a medical facility for medical treatment," said Twigg.

Kraaifontein police registered a culpable homicide case for investigation.

City of Cape Town traffic spokesperson Maxine Bezuidenhout commented on the traffic officer knocked down assisting at the scene of the fatal accident.

"The traffic officer, who was busy closing a lane, was hit by a white bakkie. The driver fled the scene.

"The officer suffered a broken leg and was taken to hospital," said Bezuidenhout. 

She said the incident is being investigated.
