Two pilots sustained critical injuries when a light aircraft crashed in Midrand on Wednesday morning.

According to the Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre (ARCC), Air Traffic and Navigation Services at Grand Central Airport alerted authorities after the aircraft experienced an emergency, lost contact with Air Traffic Control, and went down in Austin View.

The ARCC activated its early warning network in Gauteng, alerting a wide range of emergency and rescue services.

Operations chief Gregory Critchley said the first responders found the crash scene and the two critically injured pilots.

Aeromedical services provided urgent on-scene treatment before airlifting them to a hospital.

The crash site has since been handed over to the police and the Accident and Incident Investigations Division of the South African Civil Aviation Authority for investigation.

Police have been approached for comment, which will be added once received.
