South African pop star Tyla won her second Grammy on Sunday in Los Angeles.

The singer was once again honoured in the Best African Music Performance category for her hit single Push 2 Start, which was released in October 2024. She won the inaugural award in this category in 2024, with her breakout hit Water.

Other artists who were nominated in the category this year included Burna Boy, Davido with Omah Lay, Eddy Kenzo & Mehran Matin, and Ayra Starr with Wizkid.

Tyla’s win was announced at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards premiere ceremony at the Peacock Theatre, where the majority of awards are handed out ahead of the main event. She did not accept the award on stage.

During a backstage interview, she expressed regret about not being able to deliver her acceptance speech.

“I’m so mad. Like, I almost made it,” she said, with a smile.

However, she delivered a speech during the interview:

“Guys, first of all, Africa. Like, guys, this is insane. This is so insane. I’m just so lucky to be here, and I’m so proud to be African. I’m so proud to be where I’m from, and I hope that everyone is too.”

I’m excited to see more of us over here. I already thanked a lot of people. I thank God. I thank my family, my team, my Tygers,” she added.

Tyla also announced that her sophomore album would be released during the US summer and would be titled “A Pop”.

South African comedian Trevor Noah was also nominated for a Grammy in the Best Audio Book, Narration, and Storytelling Recording; the award went to the Dalai Lama. Noah was the host of the main ceremony.
