The University of KwaZulu-Natal is investigating a case of arson after unknown assailants set a lecture hall in the chemistry building on fire on Tuesday.

University spokesperson Normah Zondo said the incident happened at the Westville campus around midday.

Zondo said preliminary information relating to the incident indicated that one or more people had set the building alight, causing extensive damage to the furniture and the building structure.

Zondo said the university's Risk Management Services' swift response prevented further damage to the building and its contents.

The university evacuated the building as a safety measure.

"University management unequivocally condemns all acts of violence. We appeal to students to refrain from engaging in criminal behaviour. Such acts of violence, disruption and property destruction not only endanger lives, but also jeopardise the university's vital infrastructure and resources, upon which countless students rely," she said.

Zondo said the university's security team monitored the situation.

The police responded to the scene. Their comment will be added once received.
