About 205 academics and support staff from the University of the Western Cape (UWC) have endorsed an open letter calling on the council to explain why a candidate who was rated "most suitable" for appointment as vice-chancellor was not appointed.

The staff noted with "great concern" the announcement by council chair Xoliswa Daku, on 4 April, of the appointment of Professor Robert Balfour as the university's vice-chancellor, with effect from 1 January 2025.

In the letter, dated 11 April and titled "Concerned UWC Staff", an explanation of the recruitment process, which started in February 2023, was laid out.
