Unknown gunmen opened fire on two men sitting in a parked vehicle.

• Three people were shot and killed in Braamfontein on Thursday afternoon.
• A bus carrying students was caught in the crossfire.
• Various road closures were in place.

Three people, including a student who was caught in the crossfire, were shot, and killed in broad daylight in Braamfontein on Thursday afternoon.

According to the police, unknown gunmen opened fire on two men sitting in a parked vehicle on Thursday afternoon. Both occupants were killed.

During the shooting, a bus carrying university students was caught in the crossfire.

Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said two students were also shot.

One of them was declared dead, while the other was taken to the nearest hospital for medical treatment.

"The motive of the shooting is subject to a police investigation, and a case of murder and attempted murder has been opened. No one has been arrested," Nevhuhulwi said.

In a notice to students and staff, Wits University said it was aware of the shooting, possibly related to taxi violence. 

"No Wits students or staff have been injured…  At this stage, the university is doing all it can to assist emergency services and the police on the scene."

It said Jorissen Street was closed between Station and Bertha streets.

Bertha Street was also closed between DeKorte and AmesHoff streets.

The police have requested anyone who can assist with the investigation or tracing of the suspects to contact them.
