KwaZulu-Natal police have arrested a teenager after a newborn baby was found in a pit latrine in Sundumbili.

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the arrest to News24.

“[An] 18-year-old mother has been arrested for concealment of birth,” he said.

The newborn baby was rescued on Friday morning after being found in the pit latrine.

IPSS Medical Rescue and IPSS Search and Rescue responded following reports that a baby had been dumped.

IPSS’ Samantha Meyrick said: “Concerned community members heard the cries and were quick to react, rescuing the baby boy.

He was treated on scene by IPSS Medical Rescue and transported to Sundumbili Clinic in a stable condition.

Meyrick thanked the community for rescuing the baby and caring for him until emergency services arrived.

Netshiunda said the child was still being processed at a medical facility.
