
Two workers have been rescued after they were trapped in a collapsed trench at a construction site at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.

The man was one of two trapped when a trench collapsed on Friday at a construction site.
According to V&A Waterfront spokesperson Donald Kau, the incident occurred at 14:00 on the East Pier, where an infrastructure repair project is taking place.

The two workers were trapped but were saved by the protection shoring that formed part of the trench they were working in.
One worker was retrieved first and treated by paramedics on site, while the rescue operation continued for the second, who remained trapped but was said to be conscious and communicating.

Kau confirmed that the worker has now been rescued.
“The second worker has been retrieved and is being taken to hospital for treatment of injuries sustained.”
Police and Cape Town metro officers, along with paramedics, are on the scene.
