Former University of Johannesburg (UJ) vice-chancellor Ihron Rensburg received a whopping total cost-to-company package of R54.8 million over five years, which included R10.1 million in performance bonuses and R18.8 million in deferred compensation.

This cumulative amount was paid to Rensburg between 2013 to 2017, according to a 297-page report compiled by the Council on Higher Education (CHE).

The council was tasked by Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande to investigate the remuneration of vice-chancellors and other senior executives at South Africa's 26 public universities from 2005 to 2019.
