The Randburg Magistrate's Court had more foot traffic than usual on Wednesday.

Several Diepsloot residents assembled in court after the police arrested five people who are accused of murder and inciting violence in the suburb.

Over the weekend, seven people were killed in two separate attacks in the area.

The victims were beaten and burnt.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane told News24:

They are facing five counts of murder, five counts of attempted murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, kidnapping, malicious damage to property, and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Journalists from several media houses were in court but were restricted from filming or taking pictures.

"As the NPA, we had to oppose the application by the media to film the proceedings since investigations are still ongoing," Mjonondwane said.

Community leader Loyiso Toyiya, who was in attendance, asked attendees to keep calm and trust the legal system.
