It's 06:00 on Saturday and the birds are chirping outside the Lobelia Court social housing complex in Lotus Park, Isipingo - about 25 kilometres from Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

Inside a two-bedroom apartment, Abigail Govender's family is beaming with excitement and frantically getting ready to attend the ANC's election manifesto launch at Moses Mabhida Stadium. When News24 arrives, family friend Samantha Naidoo puts two slices of white bread and two pieces of KFC chicken in disposable containers to ensure that everyone attends the launch with full stomachs, while Govender's cousin, Kayleen Mala Kisten, irons the olive-green ANC golf shirt of her husband, Neville Joseph, on the kitchen counter.

With ANC bibs and t-shirts bearing Ramaphosa's face in hand, Govender makes last-minute transport arrangements for her family and community members. She is an ANC organiser in her community.
